CORAL explores how children can develop AI literacy and computational thinking skills through designing and programming social robots for older adults. The project engages upper-elementary students (grades 4–6) in hands-on learning experiences where they investigate older adults' interests and needs, brainstorm meaningful interactions, and develop robot behaviors that promote social connection and physical engagement. By integrating human-centered design, robotics, and intergenerational collaboration, CORAL encourages children to become thoughtful creators of AI technologies while considering how their designs can positively impact others.

CORAL develops and evaluates an educational curriculum that introduces children to physical AI, computational thinking, and the engineering design process through intergenerational robot design challenges. Students interview older adults, identify opportunities for meaningful engagement, and design and program robot activities such as storytelling, dancing, and guided exercises. The project includes teacher co-design workshops, classroom-based activities, and informal library learning experiences. Through these experiences, we investigate how designing robots for real-world users influences children's understanding of AI, creative identity, design practices, and perspectives on technology's role in supporting intergenerational relationships.
